When Should I see an Orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children get their first check-up with an AAO orthodontist at the first recognition of an orthodontic problem, but no later than age 7. Around that age, children have a mix of baby (primary) and permanent teeth. An examination as permanent teeth take the place of baby teeth, and as the face and jaws are growing, gives us a wealth of information. If a problem exists, or if one is developing, we are able to advise you on whether treatment is recommended, when it should begin, what form treatment will take, and estimate its length.
My top teeth look great, can I only great braces on the bottom?
Orthodontic treatment is designed to develop teeth that fit well and, as a result, wear better over an individual’s life. Think of teeth in the mouth as a “gear” system. Teeth, like gears, must intermesh well to help avoid excessive wear throughout a lifetime of use. An ideal orthodontic result most often requires treatment of both the top and bottom teeth.
How Does the orthodontist move my teeth?
Teeth are moved by placing gentle, controlled forces on them, as the orthodontist uses “appliances” such as braces or clear aligners to guide them to their ideal positions over a period of time. Tooth movement happens because of the breakdown and rebuilding of bone tissue. These appliances could be braces, clear aligners, or retainers.
What are retainers?
At the end of “active” treatment (when teeth are being moved), most patients will wear retainers to give the new bone a chance to harden and support the new positions of the teeth. Some retainers can be used to cause minor movement on teeth that need minimal correction. Don't count on retainers to fix larger concerns.
Am I too old for braces?
You can have a healthy, beautiful smile at any age. Orthodontic treatment today is a viable option for almost any adult. Like youngsters, adults can experience the self-assurance that comes with a confident smile, along with the benefits of improved oral health. Your treatment option may not have to be metal braces, many smiles can be re-created using ceramic "tooth colored" braces or clear aligners instead.
I already have braces on, can I transfer my treatment?
We understand that "life happens" and sometimes its necessary to transfer your treatment. We do accept transfers on a case by case basis. We often request that you provide or your previously treating doctor provide your records. This helps us give you continuity of your care to deliver the great results we try to deliver. If you are wearing clear aligners, we accept those as well, as long as the treatment was delivered by a qualified dental professional.
Are braces expensive?
We won't sugar coat this. Giving anyone that awesome smile is life changing, and does involve an investment of time and financial resources. We do offer a variety of options to help meet the financial obligations. We are also in network with many insurance companies. Don't let the potential cost keep you from gaining that smile you have always wanted.
Do you Accept Transfer Cases?
Sometimes its not possible to complete treatment with your original orthodontist and your case must be completed elsewhere. We do accept transfers on a case by case basis.
